David Potts-Dupre: Music

Bittersweet

(David Potts-Dupre)
I literally woke up one morning with the first verse and melody in my head from a dream. My wife and kids were in Arizona at the time and I called them that morning to sing the verse over the phone. Neither of my kids are yet married and I don’t anticipate having strong bittersweet feelings, but marriage does represent a change and I think those feelings are legitimate.

Darling I’m glad that you found someone dear to you
Someone to have and to hold
Someone to be there through sunshine and thunderstorms
Who’ll love you when you’re young and you’re old

And darling I’ll be there come rain or come shine
And I’ll come with my dancing shoes on
And I’ll try hard to smile as we walk down the aisle
But I can’t celebrate my girl being gone

Cause there’s a time and a place for happiness
And some times when you only can cry
But there’re also those times that are bittersweet
When you smile through the tears in your eyes

Darling I’m proud of the woman you’ve come to be
The way you’ve strode out in the world
But no matter your age, I can’t help but say to you
You’ll always be my little girl

And I’ll walk down the aisle and I’ll let go of your hand
And I’ll listen to you both say “I do”
And I’ll eat and I’ll drink and I’ll dance and I’ll cry
And with those tears I will bid you adieu

Darling I’ll be there come rain or come shine
And I’ll come with my dancing shoes on
And I’ll try hard to smile as we walk down the aisle
But I can’t celebrate my girl being gone
