David Potts-Dupre: Music

Just Like You

(David Potts-Dupre)
I started this song a number of years ago with the first verse. At that time, the lyrics then took a right turn and described a father and daughter where the mother, who had been abandoned as a child, abandons the two of them. The father is dead set on being there for his daughter so she won’t turn out like her mother. That song became “Not Like You” on my first cd. While preparing for this cd, I came across the old lyrics and decided to write a companion piece resurrecting the original first verse. Both of the songs came to me from my relationship with my daughters, not from my relationship with my wife. It was a vehicle to express my feelings as a father.
Just Like You David Potts-Dupre 9/11

I see a patch of red in the sun bleached corn
Catching rays of light on this Iowa morn
The air is sweet and the sky deep blue
And I see a young girl that looks like you

She has your auburn hair, she has your eyes – earth brown
She has your Devil may care, she has your skeptical frown
The air is sweet and the sky deep blue
And I see a young girl that looks like you
Just like you

She runs across the field and she calls to me
Do you see that hawk, Daddy, do you see
The air is sweet and the sky deep blue
And I see a young girl that looks like you

A photo of you sits by my chair
Your eyes are so bright and your skin is so fair
But I don’t need that photo to picture you
I see you every day, she’s you through and through

She climbs up in my lap, and looks me eye to eye
She says that hawk is mama, that’s mama in the sky
The air is sweet and the sky deep blue
And I see a young girl that looks like you
Just like you

Yeah, mama’s in the sky, dear, mama’s always near
I smile and kiss her cheek and kiss a salty tear
The air is sweet and the sky deep blue
And I see a young girl that looks like you
Just like you
